Gotta Dye Sometime

10am - 11am

Gotta Dye Sometime:  hands on dyeing with several different dye pots to choose from.

Participants in the dye class must pre-mordant their wool. (http://herbsymposium.webs.com/classpreparation.htm

Please, not more than one pound of wool per person.  Though, if all dye pots are not exhausted by the end of the day you may (or may not) have a chance to dye more.  Small chunks of prepared wool will be available for a small charge if you which to partake in the class but don't have your own wool.

Know Your Greens!

11am - 12noon

We've all had "Mixed Green" salads and eaten green leafy vegetables,
but do you really know what Kale tastes like?  We will take a variety of leafy greens and
herbs and taste them individually.  We will also discuss the characteristics of each of
the greens and some alternative methods of preparing them for use in a dish where
appropriate.

Humpty Dumpty Fell into a Pot - Youth

11am - 12noon

A youth dye class with herbs and goose eggs.  Parents are welcome to assist.  Each child gets one egg. (adults and extras cost $1)  Herbs will be pressed on the eggs, then the eggs will be placed in a dye pot.

Potluck Lunch

12noon - 1pm

Bring a dish and enjoy a potluck lunch!

Period Fruit Varieties (or Apples and Roses and Pears, oh my!)

1pm - 2pm

Believe it or not, you can grow the same varieties of roses and some
fruits in your yard that were around way back when.  We'll discover ways
of squeezing trees into little yards, talk about grafting and
pollination, and more.  Emphasis on varieties you can get hold of (not
extinct ones).  Handout includes pictures and sources.

Dyeing in Time:  A discussion on the history of dyes.

Herbs & Plants Depicted in Medieval Times

2pm - 3pm

Herbs and Plants were used in a variety of aspects of Medieval Life.  We will explore and touch on different and many unique places that herbs were used.  This class will encompass what this Symposium is all about and with intrique its students to look around and explore your own SCA hobby for the presence of herbs.

Young & Growing - Youth

2pm - 3pm

Kids get to repot herbs to take home and grow.  They can replant them in the yard at home or keep in their containers.  Again, parent's are encouraged to assist.  (adults may repot and take home as well for a small fee to cover supplies as long as supplies last.)

Medieval Apothecary

3pm - 4pm

History on the apothecary and examples of period concoctions, with several samples to examine. Plenty of hand outs and goodies ready to show. Lots of stuff to touch and smell.

Rinse & Repeat:
A chase to over-dye your fabric in a second pot or simply rinse and compare.

Medieval Garden Design

4pm - 5pm

Wondering about the layout of your garden? 
Want to have a "medieval corner" but worried about your chain link
fence?  Or just curious?  Come to Medieval Garden Design, where we will
look at beautiful pictures and discover what commonalities you may
already have.  Will have a practical aspect of applying to your own
yard, with an emphasis on suburban size.   Lovely color handout $1 (or
b&w free) includes a list of plants and some sources.
